Somewhere Special: Santorini
Sometimes we all need to get away somewhere special and enjoy a thoroughly self-centred experience, where we can relax and recharge those weary batteries. When you’ve been to all of the Canary Islands, had enough of Portugal and when Spain vacations just don’t quite cut it, why not up the ante a little and try somewhere new?
As special places go, Santorini is right up there with the best of them. This beautiful Greek island is quite different to the crowded beaches and bubbly Western-influenced resorts of its neighbours. Santorini is all blue-domed churches, cute sugar-cube villages and steep rocky cliffs offering dramatic views across a shimmering deep blue sea.
Tumbling down a steep craggy hillside is the magnificent town of Thira. Accessible only on foot, in a cable car or on the legs of a donkey, a visit to this fabulous place is like stepping back in time. It has a wonderfully laid-back ambience that filters through to its homely restaurants, cheerful boutiques and low-key bars selling numerous varieties of the local wine. It’s a truly magical place that’s bound to help you forget the stresses and strains of everyday life, leaving you feeling fully refreshed and raring to go. Although perhaps not immediately after that steep walk!
Despite its exclusive appeal, Santorini holidays don’t necessarily come with the luxury price tag. It’s typically a little more than your average beach break, but you’ll still find plenty of cheap holidays to Santorini that won’t break the bank. The best bet is to book well in advance. This gives you the full spectrum of choice, enabling you to seek out the more basic and lower priced accommodation before it gets booked up, and it also gives you longer to pay off the cost of your holiday.
Even if you do pay a little more than your typical holiday, a trip to Santorini is a seriously special occasion and one that you’ll treasure forever.

That’s a very beautiful island. There’s so many prejudices about vacationing in Greece (at least in the Netherlands there are) and I don’t believe them to be at all true!
I should explore Europe in more detail some day.
