Dubrovnik: the Pearl of the Adriatic and a charmer to all who visit the heart of Croatia. It’s a city that must be seen to be believed. Wrapped in the arms of a stone wall with the sea at your side, Dubrovnik sends you back in time to when life was simple. Food, water, and sunshine are the staples of this city; of course, there’s much more to do than that.
Visit a Private Island
Okay, so it’s not so secluded today thanks to the internet, but the beautiful island of Lokrum is still uninhabited and lush as ever. You can get there by a boat hire which should cost under $10, or you can get a great workout and kayak the 8 mile loop yourself. Either way, it’s another opportunity to get close to nature while soaking up the ambiance of the Adriatic.
Speaking of close to nature- keep your eyes peeled for the peacocks flitting around the island who love to put on a show for visitors as long as you keep your distance.
Sometimes You Have to Splash Out
There are times when travel calls for being an extreme penny pincher – like, all those years in your 20’s – however there are experiences which are truly once in a lifetime, and they cannot be missed at any cost.
One of these is a stay at the Villa Dubrovnik. To feel like you are the only people in the world surrounded solely by rocks, sun, and the staggering view from your balcony is a must-do. The views are stunning, the private sun loungers on the beach have your name written on them, and the staff are eager to help plan every aspect of your trip. Even if you have to balance the splurge of Villa Dubrovnik with staying in the cheapest hotels in Dubrovnik for the rest of your stay, it’s still worth it!
Save Money on Your Trip
Try this basic stay at Apartments Klam Hotel whose prices start at $29 per night for a double room.
You can take advantage of plenty of cheap and free activities in and around the city. If seeking tranquility is on your list, make your way to the Dominican Friary, an impressive monastery which boasts artifacts from as far back as the 14th century.
Walking the city walls costs nothing and is a memorable feat in and of itself. Don’t forget to pack extra batteries for your camera as you’re going to want to take advantage of the spectacular views from up there. Wearing good shoes is recommended, it can get slippery.
Another free activity – depending on your self-control – is strolling through the open-air markets in the square. The smell of fresh figs is enough to drive you crazy with hunger, but once you wander upon the stalls selling lavender sachets you will feel calm and serene. This is a great opportunity to meet locals and ask them their favorite places to eat nearby, which are usually spots the tourists don’t (yet) know about!
