Downtown Madrid can be a madhouse; from the hustle and bustle of Gran Via to the street performers of Sol, where is one to find a haven?
While searching for the best getaway within the center (pro tip: use google images to search for beautiful hotels with charm) I saw the marbled walls of the
Artistic B&B and knew this was where to lay my head. From the first email exchanges with the owners Paola and Rodolfo I was overcome with a sense of friendliness and hospitality and this carried on through the end of my visit.
“Life is about using the whole box of crayons”
From the moment I entered their hand decorated door, Rodolfo made me feel at home, offering me a cup of tea and sitting down to chat about his family, the B&B, and how himself and his wife made the move from Argentina to Madrid. He had a map prepared with restaurants, hotspots, interesting historical facts and lots of helpful information. This is a touch I always appreciate about smaller hotels. The internet has made it easier than ever to sink your teeth into authentic travel, experiencing a place like a local. I find this is always easier at small establishments as the staff is typically more involved with their guests.
The B&B is centrally located in the Barrio de Las Letras which is home to Madrid´s literary and artistic crowd. The house that famous writer Cervantes died in is just around the corner, as is one of
my favorite vegan restaurants Rayen Vegano, and it´s just a few minutes walk from my favorite plaza in Madrid, Santa Ana.
Art doesn´t stop at the doors of this hotel though, Paola is a talented, dedicated, and creative artist who has added life to the building through her beautiful artwork. From the hand made tiles that come together to create outstanding mosaics to the unique breakfast table, art is at the heart of their home. Our room had a lovely balcony, bed, and space to hang our clothes, which is always nice.

Digital creatives, take heart, the WiFi is fast and Rodolfo is a computer expert, even lending me a hand to defrag my computer!
No B&B is complete without a good breakfast, and they don´t disappoint. Rodolfo acts as chef, freshly baking bread each morning. We sat down and were served alongside all the other guests, enjoying a communal breakfast which felt more like a cafe where you know everyone. The selection of pastries was great, the coffee fresh, and the conversation was so fun that I bolted out the door in a run to catch the
Madrid Food Tour.
We loved our stay at the Artistic B&B and will definitely keep them on our list for when we need a room in the center. Booking directly through their site is best, their email service is fast and friendly!
Note : I was a guest of the Artistic B&B for this visit, however as always, my opinions are my own and cannot be bought. For all the legalese surrounding this please check out my
less than boring disclaimer.
