Are you looking for an unusual and one-of-a-kind experience for your next visit to Madrid? The Rock Bus is the perfect solution for any Rock and Roll and live theater lover. There’s one thing that sets it apart from all other shows : it’s on a bus. Yes, a moving bus. You get picked up in the beautiful and historic Plaza Colón, and dropped off across the street at – of course- The Hard Rock Café.
Falling in Love
Stepping onto the bus feels like stepping into the theater, and I will admit that I was very hesitant at first. Seriously, how can the actors give a performance in such a tiny space while it is moving? Well, they can and they did!
The storyline follows a young boy who falls in love with a young girl, and is set to the soundtrack of rock music from the 50’s all the way to the grungy 90’s.
Popping the Question
The actors were full of life and great energy, their voices were outstanding and their charisma was contagious. Everyone on the bus is encouraged to sing along to favorites such as “I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” by the one and only Elvis Presley. “Californication” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana.
It felt like going to Karaoke with your friends at some parts, and it felt like a captivating and personal performance at others. While the overall show is lighthearted there are some parts that include the pitfalls of the 70’s – too much partying, shall we say?
Victims of the 70s
It’s definitely appropriate for families and those with children will appreciate that the actors include them in the show by giving them props at appropriate times. Though I started out unsure, I left a believer and an enthusiast! The actors gave the show their all, pulled off several costume changes and made for a very believable couple.
The Talent!
The best part was how much they got the audience involved : from stepping on board and being handed a mini electric guitar and given a chance to practice your headbanging to full audience participation during the show it was an all around great time.
Rock Bus is perfect for visitors who speak Spanish or tourists who are traveling with a friend who can help translate some of the jokes. While most of the show is rather easy to understand using their body language – and the entire soundtrack is in English, and songs you certainly already know by heart – there are slight nuances you might miss unless you have at least some Spanish.
