Tokyo, Japan is a City Best Seen in Spring

Japan is an enchanting country, rich in cultural traditions and shrouded in mystery as grand as Mount Fuji. But what about Tokyo, the bustling hub and heart of the country? One of the most beautiful times to visit Tokyo is in the Spring for their iconic cherry blossom festival. The blossoms can be found all over the city but are clustered in a few areas.

Of course, it’s not always easy to plan a trip to see the blossoms as Mother Nature doesn’t publish a schedule of when she will delight us with these beautiful blooms. Look for notifications the first and second weeks of March, and try to find a Tokyo hotel with flexible booking policies! One more tip: if Tokyo has a very cold or long winter, the blossoms will usually come out later in April rather than March.

The Asukayama and Ueno Onshi parks are famous for their spectacular blossoms. When visiting Tokyo during this time of year it’s best to walk around (if you don’t have allergies, that is!) the city instead of using public transportation as you’re likely to spot even more trees that aren’t part of the typical route.

For unbeatable romance, try staying closer to the Meguro River and Sumida Riverbank where you can enjoy strolling over bridges with your loved one or your selfie stick. Don’t worry, you’ll blend right in with the locals. For a real taste of Japanese youth culture make your way to Yoyogi Park where you will get a glimpse of a cartoon-like world. Here the kids come to hang out and are often decked out in head to toe costumes of their favorite characters whether it’s from real life or cartoon. Cosplay comes to life here!

Conveniently it’s also right next to the Meiji Shrine which stands in stark contrast to the pop-culture park. The Meiji Shrine is a tranquil haven from the loud and bustling Tokyo. Here it’s not uncommon to find traditional weddings taking place with full regalia and procession. If you stumble upon one of these – take a moment and soak it in – it’s a truly once in a lifetime experience and a ceremony of beauty.
