Formerly divided in two, Berlin now stands wholly and unwaveringly as one of Europe’s most attractive cities in nearly every sense of the word. From grungy basement clubs hidden down narrow streets adorned with artistic murals to the sleek, chic, and undeniably exclusive skyscraper hangouts of the rich and famous, Berlin has something for everyone.
One thing you’re sure to notice right away about Berlin is that there is no right or wrong way to live. Therefore, there is no right or wrong way to see the city.
Become a Pastry Expert
The best way to see Berlin is to live like a local. Hit the streets for your morning coffee and try as many delicious pastries as you can comfortably eat. Don’t worry about the calories, though — you’ll be burning them off when you go exploring.
No trip to Berlin would be complete without a Berliner Pfannkuchen, which is a cream- or jelly-filled doughnut without a hole in the middle. Fillings range from jams and preserves to rich chocolate custards. There are even varieties that have a champagne filling! Dusted with a layer of powdered sugar, these delicious doughnuts get served hot, fast, and fresh to eager customers, so get there early.
Here’s a tip when it comes to getting the goodies: Look out for the seal of the golden pretzel on the door or window of the establishment to ensure that the place is a certified, high-level bakery.
Drink Mugs of Beer in the Shade
Beer gardens are not just some fairy tale that your tipsy world-traveling friend told you — they’re alive and very much real. Berlin is a great place to immerse yourself in the wonderful world of this national drinking style.
Don’t be fooled by a place that throws up a few umbrellas and a sign that declares “Biergarten.” Ever German, there are even rules surrounding beer. A traditional beer garden should serve hot and fresh food, and the garden aspect means that there must be shelter provided by actual trees or a canopy of vines.
There’s something incredibly relaxing about sitting with nature while sipping a cold brew after a long day of sight-seeing. Try it, and you’ll see for yourself!
Café am Neuen See has a reputation for being the best all-encompassing beer garden, given it’s proximity to the lake, abundant trees, and fresh food on offer all day long.
Sleep Like a Baby — a Money-Saving Baby
Though Berlin is comparatively cheap for being a major European city, the hotel prices can still be unfriendly. Don’t worry, though. The TRYP by Wyndham Berlin City East has rooms for as little as $60 per night to help you stay within your budget.
If you prefer the locals’ view on the city, however, staying with an Airbnb host is a great option. This Central Berlin apartment is within walking distance of most of the major attractions in Berlin. Also, your host would be happy to give you a local guide to the area and point you in the right direction for all the restaurants, museums, and underground activities your heart desires.
