Have you ever visited Europe during Christmastime? It’s absolutely a magical time of year whether you celebrate Christmas or not. Strolling around Madrid once the lights go on is one of the best (and free!) activities the city has to offer. Start on Calle Alcala and follow the brightest lights towards the center of the city. No matter which way you turn, you’re sure to find something that leaves you in awe.
Just as the sun is setting, they switch on the lights! Plaza Colón is the home to the monuments of Christopher Columbus as well as the pickup point for the NAVIBUS, which is an open-top double decker bus that does a one hour tour of the christmas lights in Madrid. In 2014 the tickets were only 2 euro per person – so it’s a real steal!
Pro Tip : wait to get the front row seats as the whole window will be yours and there will be no one in front of you.
As seen from the bus…
Everyone has to take a stroll down the Paseo. Grab your loved ones and go arm in arm – slowly as the Spanish do.
Just waiting for the bus…
Almost every shop in the city does something to bring cheer.
The delicious Roscón de Reyes – or King’s Cake. Inside a little toy is hidden (definitely not the safest idea) and whoever finds it wins! What do they win? I’m still not sure…
