Is Madrid The Liveliest City in the World?

Madrid is one of the most alive cities in the world — except during siesta — but it can be challenging to know just when and where to find the action in the city. Here’s a few times the city is most vibrant; these are unique Madrileño moments that should not be missed.

Stroll Through El Rastro on Sunday

Every Sunday, Domgingueros (people who stroll around on Sunday; yes, there’s a word for it because it’s such a thing) take to the streets of the La Latina neighborhood in search of the next best bargain. As one of Europe’s largest open air flea markets, The Rastro is a huge maze of everything from clothing, jewelry, to old electronics, and antiques.

El Rastro is more than a market: bustling with street performers, locals having a café con leche ( the famous coffee and milk), outstanding one-of a kind artists, this market is the summary of Madrid on a Sunday.

Relax and take in the sunshine, stroll slowly like the locals do or else you might feel claustrophobic, have a look at what interests you, but most importantly don’t feel you need to see it all — because it’s impossible. When you’re all done, head into Plaza Mayor to grab a famous calamari sandwich (or roast pepper sandwich for vegetarians).

Catch a Football Match In Person

Now for something totally different — but undoubtedly the most energy you will feel in the city — go to a football match! Remember, the word football in Europe means soccer. When you arrive in Madrid, you will note there are two main teams vying for the city’s affection: Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Both are teams with a lot of heart, but Atletico is the underdog.

The best way to find tickets is through the team website, so pick your side. If you’re planning a trip in advance, try to see the match “El Clasico” when these two local teams go head to head for the title and affection of the city. The atmosphere is thick with tension, and the audience puts their hearts and souls into it. El Clasico is a true Madrid experience.

Don’t worry if you can’t get tickets to the real deal, just hit up a local bar during the match, Madrid hotels have great happy hours, (you’ll know which is the right one by the screams and cheers flowing from the doors and windows), order a caña, and enjoy!

Live Like a Local – Stay Up All Night

One night on the town, and you’ll understand why the Spanish have a tradition of siesta. Dinnertime really is 10 pm! Make the most of your time by doing tapas for dinner. Tapas are small portions of food, usually enjoyed alongside a caña (small beer) or glass of wine. By eating at several tapas bars you will be able to find the place with the perfect ambiance for you. If you happen to be in town during the famous Tapapiés festival (typically in October) make sure to check out all the places in the Lavapies neighborhood that offer a caña and tapa for only two euro!
